For large firms with public debt, the onset of financial distress is often a signal of the need for debt restructuring either through a court-supervised procedure, such as Chapter 11, or an out-of-court procedure, such as an exchange offer. By and large, the owners and creditors of such firms share a common interest in avoiding the higher bankruptcy costs associated with Chapter 11.
