The housing and consumer data continue to deteriorate. Admittedly, new home sales unexpectedly surged in August, but we are deeply skeptical of the print. The magnitude of the increase was suspiciously high—nearly 29% m/m. We have only seen something of this magnitude once since 2000 and that was in June 2020, when the housing market was coming out its temporary Covid-induced paralysis.
